I'm revisiting 'There I go falling in love again' which myself, dear Bobby Eli (R.I.P.) and Chiquita Green wrote in Philly, September 2008. Bobby did the main production, mixing and mastering work, but I did come up with the original song demo, harpsichord and pizzicato strings idea ๐Ÿ˜Š We sat together at his keyboard in the control room of his studio in Upper Darby/Philadelphia and thrashed out the chord structure, BPM, groove etc. Chiquita came up with the lyrics and organised the vocal interpretations throughout the song๐ŸŽค

The main instrumental chorus lick and the key change came from an incomplete demo I did years before and sent Bobby prior to the 2008 session. He liked it and believed it would be a good song if worked on. Chiquita was the featured artist on the eventual original release as well as co writer and is a tough act to follow vocally.

I enjoyed the 2008 session with Bobby and Chiquita and how we worked with the rhythm track and sweetening bouncing ideas around. I think it's a great song and Chiquita's delivery superb. I believe there is more mileage with the song especially with a few different mixes too. Also watching the MFSB/Salsoul Orchestra session musicians perform in the studio was a thrill. All they had were chord charts that T G Conway (R.I.P.) scribbled out on paper in the studio and presented to them on the first day of the session, plus listening to the demo we created in the studio the day before.

This latest vocal demo is evolving and has wah wah added by a great talent, Piera Mussardo, from Italy. I saw one of her terrific YouTube performances of a 1970s Barry White song/recording called 'Let the music play' and contacted her via her website url to inquire whether she would be interested in playing on this track. A fabulous talented musician indeed. The last minute of the song has a refreshing counter melody changing things slightly as it chugs along to the fade out. Recently more kick and drum work has been added to that section. The first lead vocal recordings have been done, the background vocals to follow. In addition I am seriously contemplating some live harp from a session musician/contractor. That is easier said then done, but I have hopefully found somebody from Hull. The story how this came about will be revealed and intriguing if recorded. Also, some bass guitar has been changed on the middle eight in line with the original version.

If released, I may will include the original short 2005 instrumental demo which was simply named '25' in the early days (written for a potential UK Northern Soul film). It then became '25's another number' which had lyrics on its own merit, then in Philly 'Never too late' and finally 'There I go falling in love again' in Philly again. In fact I think there was another UK titled demo version of the song somewhere. You can hear the remnants of 'Never too late' as a lyric song title on the last line of the chorus on 'TIGFILA'. Stay tuned...๐ŸŽธ

Bandtraxs are delighted to release 'He's always mad about something' performed this time by The Formellas. This is a throwback to a mid 1970s east coast disco style production which may have emanated from the likes of Philly & New York. The recording process is over, the mix/masters are complete for an official release on the 2nd April 2023. The original version was by The Delgonives released in 2017.

The drums were recorded in Detroit, the guitars, bass and horns all recorded in Nashville. Thank you to Drew, Sam, Gary, Mark, Roy and Mike as usual. The track listing looks like this:

  1. He’s always mad about something (Vocal Radio Mix)                   GBXNE2200001  3:31
  2. He’s always mad about something (Instrumental Radio Mix)        GBXNE2200002  3:30
  3. He’s always mad about something (Extended Vocal Mix)             GBXNE2200003  4:34
  4. He’s always mad about something (Extended Instrumental Mix)  GBXNE2200004  4:32
  5. He’s always mad about something (Trombone Vocal Mix)            GBXNE2200005  3:31
  6. He’s always mad about something (Mono Vocal Mix)                   GBXNE2200006  3:31
  7. He’s always mad about something (Sounds Like 70s Vinyl Mix)   GBXNE2200007  3:31
  8. He's always mad about something (Vocal Deluxe Mix)                 GBXNE2200008  3:31

A number of mixes exist which may appeal to Music Supervisors for their programming/production needs and those who may just like instrumentals or alternative versions. This release includes a first 'Vocal Deluxe' version and features an octave difference on some of the strings, a male background vocal in addition to the female ones and a glockenspiel punctuating the strings in places. The 'Trombone' mix changes the last chorus by removing the lead vocal and only using the solo ad lib which is on all the other vocal versions with the chorus. In addition there is extra trombone in that same segment which makes it uniquely different compared to the other vocal versions. I have had some positive feedback regarding previous 'Sounds like vinyl' mixes which has encouraged me to make available on this release too. Dust, warp, hum, noise can be added digitally and here with a view to replicate a mid 70s stereo 45 rpm vinyl record.
